How To Make Different Color LED Lights? [DIY Method & More]

Be it LED light or strips of any other kind, everyone intends to decorate a space with them. Led lights are beautiful and they lighten up a space beautifully. Especially for home decor, people highly appreciate these lights. Though most of them are available in white or warm yellow shade, you may also change the color for a perky look.

Now the question comes of how to make different color LED lights? Well, the clear answer is there are technical ways to do so. But besides that, you can make simple LED lights colored with a DIY process. It may sound difficult but is not as hard as you may assume.

On that note, I am writing this piece to tell you how you can make colored LED lights and also change the color of them. Here, I will show a DIY method and a technical method to do so. To be honest, these are the easiest ways I have found out.

So let’s get started then!

3 Steps To Make Different Color LED Lights: DIY Method

If you have those little diode lights that are white, I have a way to make them colored. Trust me, it is really fun to do this and the outcome is amazing.

Diode lights are tiny lights that make a chain to give a bright light to an area. These are mostly used for decorating rooms and highlighting areas like beside a painting. They more or less look like rice lights but are slightly bigger and brighter.

Now it is true that there are colored LED lights available. But they are costly and this DIY gives you the same result at a reduced cost. If you have the white diode lights, I have a simple process to make them colored and get a vibrant look. Here are the steps:

Step 1: Diffuse The LED Bulbs

We are going to color the white LED lights to give them a colored look. But if you do that directly on the lights, the color won’t seem as bright as you may expect. To let the color spread evenly out of the bulbs, you need to diffuse the outer shell of the bulb.

For that, you have to sand the LED lights to remove the polished finish. Use 200 or 400-grit sandpaper for this task. Sand the bulbs gently with care so that they don’t break. Rub equally over the bulb and work on it till the plain surface is gone. The clear surface should be gone by now.

Next, wipe away the dust from the bulbs and they are ready to get colored!

Step 2: Color The Bulbs

Now is the turn to color the bulbs. As you have sanded the bulbs, the color will settle very easily on the bulbs. In fact, the color will look brighter and more vivid than it would have looked on a plain surface.

For coloring, get some marker pens. You can choose the colors you want. But the most vibrant colors for LED lights are red, green, and blue. Yes, the RGB series! However, you can use similar shades like violet, orange, or lime. But RGB looks the brightest.

Take the marker pens and color all around the bulbs. Don’t miss out on any space of the bulb as this may diffuse white light. Perfectly cover the bulb with the color and let it dry.

Step 3: Check The Effect

And it is done. You can now reset the light and connect them. Switch on the light and see the effect. The light should perfectly spread and diffuse from the bulbs and you will get decent colored lighting.

If you still get a hint of white light, color the bulbs once again to get a deeper shade. And you are all set to get colored LED lights!

It was super easy, right?

Different Color LED Lights in Color-changing LED Lights: Know Color Mixing

The previous method was a DIY method where you can make simple white lights colored. But in modern days, most LED lights are made of LED strips that have RGB diodes in them. The same RGB combination is used in TV as well with which different colors are made.

A fun fact! When the RGB lights are in full intensity, they produce white light. So when you have not adjusted the colors, you can view white light only. This is when people get confused. Just because it gives white light doesn’t mean you can’t change it. If you get the remote, you can surely change the color and it is super easy.

First, let me give you a chart to show which colors can be mixed to produce which color. As RGB is the main color palette, you have to mix them to create colors. This is fun, right?

LED ColorRedBlueGreen
White YesYes Yes
CyanNoYes Yes
MagentaYesYes No
YellowYes No Yes

Besides these combinations, when you turn off green and blue, you get a red color. Similarly, as you dim green and red, you get blue and blurring blue, and red gives green color.

You can make around 16 million colors by changing the intensity of RGB shades! But how does this happen? The LEDs contain a microcontroller that controls the on and off of the diodes. The technology of reducing the intensity of a shade is called pulse width modulation.

This technique dims the colors so fast that you can’t even notice. Rather, you see the gradual change in the colors throughout the LED strip. Okay, the procedure may sound too difficult but changing the colors is not that hard. Trust me!

Basically, you get a remote with LED color-changing lights. The remote model could vary which is why it is difficult to give definite instruction. But normally, you get two signs, one that shows lowering the brightness and the other one to increase the brightness. With these buttons, you can monitor the intensity of red, green, and blue and see which color you want.

Below this, you will get buttons for red, green, blue, and white. Press the color button you want to change and then increase or decrease the intensity. Once you are done with one color, press another color to change the brightness. This way you can mix the red, green, blue, and white colors.

In case you want to save a mixture, you get the options of ‘DIY 1’, ‘DIY 2’, and so on. Press DIY 1 before and after the mixing and it will be saved. For saving other combinations, you have to press ‘DIY 2’ before and after mixing them. This way, you can save a few color combinations.

Note that some solid colors are already added to the remote. There are buttons for yellow, orange, light blue, and a few more. As you press them, these colors come in static mode.

In the remote, you get the button to keep changing colors in a loop. The speed can be controlled as well with the remote. Some have options to monitor the gradient light too.

All in all, you get a remote along the LED light strips. You just have to learn to use the remote properly to keep changing colors. It is fun and interesting as you can make endless combinations. It completely depends on how you mix and use the primary red, blue, and green colors.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Both RGB and RBGIC can give around 16 million different colors. But if you want varied colors on the LED lights at the same at different parts of the strips, RGB lights can’t give that. But RBGIC lights can give different colors at the same time. So for changing colors at the same time, you need to have the RBGIC lights.

Why Have Your LED Lights Two Different Colors?

If your LED lights are showing two different colors without any specific setup, it is not good. This is most probably happening due to overheating. Some LED light strips don’t have effective dissipation methods. They overheat due to the adhesives used in the strips.
